On the Packard-Littlefield Farm we are dedicated to helping mitigate the effects of climate change and to using sustainable practices while farming. Currently, farming is responsible for ~25 percent of all human created greenhouse gas emissions. Plowing and tillage gradually and dramatically destroy and wear away soil, while releasing large amounts of CO2 into the atmosphere.
Here, we practice regenerative agriculture: a system of farming techniques that are meant to rehabilitate and restore the ecosystem. We reuse resources we already have instead of destroying or depleting them.
Regenerative agriculture is not a new type of farming; various indigenous communities use these methods or ones with similar objectives. At the farm, we foster relationships with our animals because they help with cycling nutrients through different plants, and get rid of weeds and pests without the use of chemicals. On our farm we use organic animal manure as fertilizer. We also use other permaculture techniques, such as, greenhouses, composting, and no-till agriculture.
Traditionally in farming when you cut, harvest, and plow you take away all the good microbes in the soil, so by using no-till techniques we are trying to rebuild the topsoil. We are focused on using nutrients to gradually build up soil quality, so we are constantly rejuvenating the earth, while strengthening plant’s health. By doing this, plants receive and hold more nutrients, which leads to better nutrition for you!
Our mission on the Packard-Littlefield farm is to rehabilitate and restore our ecosystem for the health and happiness of all of us!
